For more than 30 years, Melissa Green has been entertaining people young and old, crowds large and small, with her imaginative work. Her (very) small business, Imagimoe, has been floating around in the ether for years too. Through Imagimoe, she designed and sold sportswear, masks, handbags, candleholders… But mainly, she did theater. Decades of it. In that time she has become an expert style chameleon, able to adapt to any era - even mimicking great artists like Rembrandt and Surat as productions demanded. Click on the picture above to see some of that work.
But Coronavirus has changed it all.
We cannot gather together. No crowds means no theater.
Unable to work on productions and with a sudden wealth of time, she has turned inward to her first love… watercolor. And honing her own personal style has allowed her to shine again!
Melissa’s illustration style is very unique. She lays down loose layers of color, looks for the weird and wonderful characters within, and simply paints what she sees. She works hard not to turn away from any strange creature she finds. Her grown up mind says: “Hey, birds only have one head, so paint that.” But her inner child says: “So What!?! You see two heads, so paint them both!” The result is a cornucopia of the impossible! An unedited array of weird and wonderful creatures.
It is those creatures that drive her storylines. Usually it’s the other way around - an author has an idea, writes a story, and finds an illustrator to complete the vision. But Melissa allows the work to speak for itself. Literally!
This exercise of letting go of what should be, and embracing what is is at the center of what Melissa Green is trying to accomplish, personally and professionally.
She believes in the flow, and is always trying to exist within it.
